DINING WITH THE BETRAYER: PREPARING THE LAST SUPPER!
[17] On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” [18] He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’?” [19] So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. Matthew 26:17-19
Judas Iscariot has agreed to betray his Master. The deal is sealed and he is only looking for a window of opportunity to hand Him over to the enemy. This is the tragic fall of a disciple who walked with Jesus for over three years during which he had witnessed great miracles happening and heard deep teachings of the Kingdom. Yet against all these, his heart was far away from the truth. Will he change his mind before it is too late? Most unlikely. It is sad that a disciple like Judas Iscariot would choose to walk this path. Did he know that he was treading his soul for a mere thirty pieces of silver? Was it worth the risk? Sadly, he is not alone. How often have we seen or heard of believers treading their souls for the mere the mere pleasures of money, sex and power?
In today's passage we see that on the day of the festival had finally arrived and the disciples asked Jesus where He wanted to eat the Passover. And His response is amazing, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house." Jesus did not just know when He would be arrested and killed, He also was aware of all the events that would unfold as the climax approached. He sends the disciples to the right place, to the right house to prepare for the Passover meal. And we are told that the disciples found the house just as Jesus described it. The owner did not claim any ownership. He must have understood that he was just a steward of the resource! He opened his house for the Master to use it as requested.
Would Judas Iscariot attend the Passover meal? Would he partake of the Last Supper? Would he sit on the fellowship table and partake of the meal knowing fully well he had betrayed his Master? Were the other disciples aware of what Judas had done? This must be a very difficult time for Jesus knowing that His betrayer will share a meal with Him. How would you feel had you been in His shoes? Would you send Judas Iscariot out of the house? Would you stop him from partaking in the meal?
Good morning
