TAKE AND EAT; TAKE AND DRINK IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME!
[25] Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said so.” [26] While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” [27] Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. [28] This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. [29] I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” [30] When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. ?Matthew 26:25-30 NIV?
Late Shadreck Wame used to say that when Satan gets you, he kills your senses of sight, hearing and speech. He does so to hinder you from seeing your sin, from hearing the message of salvation and from shouting for help! Judas Iscariot had the audacity of asking Jesus if he was the one who would betray Him. And in response Jesus gave him a hint that he was, "you have said so!" Did Judas act on this response? No! His senses were completely taken over by Satan. He would die before Jesus finally gives up His spirit! As the evening meal continued Jesus took bread gave thanks and broke it and gave it to the disciples saying, "Take and eat; this is my body.” In the same way, He took a cup, and when he had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." The significance of this is that every time His followers come together for a Holy Communion, they would celebrate His death that brought salvation to the entire human race. Holy communion must be celebrated in remembrance of Him not just as religious tradition!
In celebrating the Holy Communion, taking the bread reminds us of His body which was broken under the heavy weight of our sins. He was subjected to pain and death for sins He never committed. But He was broken so that we can become whole despite our sins. The communion wine represents the blood He shed for us. He bore our sins and shed His blood for the atonement of our sins. This blood has power to cleanse us from all guilt of sin. It makes us whole! This is the blood of the covenant for the forgiveness of sins for many. Thus, we celebrate the Holy Communion in remembrance of His ultimate sacrifice for the salvation of the world. And Judas Iscariot was one of those who sat at the table to partake of this communion. He boldly participated yet, his heart was far away from the event. He had pocketed thirty pieces of silver for the role he was to play in handing Him over to His enemies! After the meal they sung a song and left for Mount of Olives. There will be no more meals with Him. He would not dine and wine with humanity again until in His Kingdom!
Celebrating the Holy Communion is a regular practice of the faith. Many of our congregations do this on a regular basis. It serves as a reminder of our redemption which was made possible through the sacrificial death of our Lord Jesus Christ. It also assures us of our acceptance before the Father having our sins cleansed through the blood of our Lord! Holy communion also reminds us of the need to keep ourselves ready for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. We cannot celebrate the Holy Communion while intentionally living in sin! We cannot be careless like Judas Iscariot to sit on the communion table while our hearts are full of sin! Such would be spiritual suicide
