SCOM organized its 2025 open day and official “Finishing Strong” theme launch on Saturday, 25th October, 2025 at Blantyre Secondary School. Secondary school and university students, SCOM staff and Associates, and representatives from various partner organizations.
In his keynote address, the board chair Mr. Warmsman Jeremiah noted that SCOM is one of the oldest organizations in Malawi and has remained vibrant. He urged students to live to please God. He said that SCOM would like to finish strong by remaining true to its objectives. Members should understand how SCOM operates so that they can effectively run their branches.
There were testimonies from students and associates. In her testimony Victory Kavumba, a student and chairlady at Blantyre Secondary School SCOM branch testified that she made up her mind that the world or people around her will know God because of her life. She called her fell students that in whatever they do, they should let people see God. In her testimony, Phales Nakuwawa a university student said that she held about SCOM while in primary school. She used to be a fun of disco shows but when she went to Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, someone asked her to join SCOM. Since then, experienced something different. She saw that there were lots of leadership skills development in SCOM. She realized that God had something for her due to the roles she was being given both in secondary school and university and the encouragements that they were receiving from associates. She encouraged fellow students to keep in mind that SCOM goes on and on and that they will become great leaders through SCOM. John Ngamiza a graduate of Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) said in his testimony that the character of a leader in him was shaped by his involvement in SCOM.
Making her speech, the General Secretary Mrs. Ellen Napala said that SCOM covers 1300 secondary schools and 98 universities and colleges in Malawi. This does not represent all schools because it is not present in some religious institutions as well as open day secondary schools. SCOM operates through staff and associates with main activities such as bible study, conferences, empowerment, literature development, creation care, peace building and others. One of the main challenges that SCOM faces is the issue of non-registered people visiting schools. She therefore asked all schools not to allow those not authorized to visit or speak in SCOM branches. SCOM has regulations that it follows.
The guest of honor Mrs. Sarah Banda started by saying that she was honored to be part of the event as it was actually taking her back to her roots. SCOM helped her to be who she had become in life coming from a beer (kachasu) drinking environment. When she was elected SCOM chairlady in her school, she started seeking to receive Jesus as he personal Lord and Savior. It marked a turn of things in her life as she became also head prefect in her school. She made influence to end teasing in her school. She echoed that SCOM builds character and their school provided a pool of leaders. She further said that Christ through SCOM is changing a lot of lives. She asked God to bless SCOM and ended her speech on the theme saying it does not matter how you start but how you finish.
